The International Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea, variously known as The Collision Regulations, Rules of the Road or simply COLREGS, apply to and are mandatory for all vessels.There are a number of Canadian modifications that apply in all Canadian waters. Local regulations, under the jurisdiction of Ports Canada, override the International Rules where they conflict.

Established in 1931, Sail Canada (formerly known as the Canadian Yachting Association) is the national governing body for the sport of sailing. The Association promotes sailing in all its forms including yachting through collaboration with their partners, the Provincial Sailing Associations, member clubs, schools, and many individual stakeholders.
